The Best Places to Travel on a Budget
By Sherry Hardesty
Well you won’t be traveling to Monaco and staying at a five star resort on a budget, will you? Maybe so! Mostly, traveling on a budget means finding the cheapest price for the experience you want.

When traveling on a budget it’s best to keep in mind the following points:

1. Travel in the off-peak seasons. You can save up to as much as fifty per cent off air flights and accommodation costs if you plan to travel in low season times.
2. Stay away from popular tourist spots (unless they are on your ‘must-see’ list). If you can go off the beaten track with your destinations, things can be cheaper to see and do and your cultural experiences will be richer.
3. Try camping. Not only is it the cheapest form of accommodation it’s a great way to get up close and personal to nature. It’s the best way to see National Parks and Heritage listed areas.
4. Look for special travel offers (or packages). But make sure you check everything that they include - and don’t include.
5. Invest in a travel pass where you are able. Most developed countries have a rail or bus transport system where you can obtain day, week or monthly passes that will get you around cheaply.
6. Get a work permit if you aim to gain employment while traveling overseas. Working can help subsidize places that aren’t so cheap, such as Europe and Australia.
7. Look for good exchange rates on the dollar. This may help you decide which country to travel to.
8. Think about shortening your visit to destinations that are expensive and increasing your length of stay in cheaper places.
9. Where possible use your credit card. The exchange rate is better.
10. When staying in a hotel, avoid paying for ‘extras’. Don’t touch anything from the honor bar. Don’t watch the in-house movies and don’t use the hotel phone. And try not to use room service too much!

On the world scene there are some great places to travel on a budget for under thirty dollars a day. In Asia you can try India, Laos, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand, Sumatra and Burma. In Central and South America you can visit El Salvador, Bolivia and Ecuador. If you are after a budget experience in the Pacific, try Fiji or New Zealand. Over in Africa there are some great budget destinations such as Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Ghana. Don’t forget the Middle East where places like Iran, Syria and Turkey provide excellent value for money and wonderful experiences for the budget traveler.

There is no ‘best place’ to travel on a budget. Just be prepared to look around, avoid the pitfalls of unwanted costs in package deals or hotel bookings. If you want to travel and your budget doesn’t meet your expectations, be flexible and see if there is somewhere cheaper you might like to experience. You could be pleasantly surprised with your stay in India or Iran, when you thought you wanted to go to Tahiti.

Going on a Ski Vacation - How to Plan For a Ski Vacation
By Holly Hall
When it comes to vacations, the big thing now is ski trips. Everyone seems to want to head off to the slopes for a day of flying down a mountain, the wind in your hair, and the powder swishing beneath your skis. If you only have a few days of vacation time, a day trip to a ski resort is a great way to use them. However, to really get the most out of a ski resort, you should really look into a ski vacation package. Because when it comes to a ski resort, skiing is just the tip of the iceberg.

If your planning a ski vacation package, keep in mind that you want something that your whole family can enjoy, no matter what skill level they are at. Many ski resorts require you to have different passes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced slopes. Be sure that your family will have access to the slopes they want to be on. And ask about classes if you’re not already skilled. It can be great to learn from a professional, and you’ll get the satisfaction of improving your skill.

And don’t forget there’s lots to do besides just skiing. There’s tubing, where you ride giant inner tubes down the ski hill. There is usually also an ice skating rink, which should offer figure skating, and hockey. And don’t forget about sledding for the little members of your family. There’s lots to do with the snow other than just to slide down it.

If it’s getting too cold outside in the snow and ice, there’s bound to be plenty of things to do inside. Most ski resorts will have game rooms with ping pong, pool, or darts. These games may seem a little old fashioned, but on a family vacation, sometimes it’s nice to get away from the video games. Of course, there might also be an arcade.

Don’t forget that many ski vacation packages will also include swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna access. These can be great choices for evening, after you’ve combed the slopes all day. Few things are nicer than a good soak in a hot tub after working your body out in the cold all day.

Along with many fun activities, most ski resorts offer a variety of foods, sometimes having multiple restaurants right on site. You may be able to have steak one night, and seafood the next. With most ski vacation packages, you should be able to find something to please everyone.

Don’t for a moment think that the only thing to do at a ski resort is just ski. As you can see, there are a plethora of other opportunities for fun, and family together time. So don’t just comb the slopes for a day. Clear a week in your calendar, and make it a real vacation. Rest assured, it will be one that your family will remember for many years to come. And likely, it will be one they’ll want to repeat next year.

How to Make Sure Your All Inclusive Vacation is Going to Exceed Expectations
By Tony Beb
If you are going to pay your hard earned money to go on a vacation, don’t you want to make sure that it is going to be everything that you hoped for? Some people who go on vacation to an all inclusive resort fail to do the proper research on their chosen resort, and the outcome can be that of disappointment. Not every all inclusive resort is as good as the next, so what you want to make sure you do before booking your vacation, is do your research. With the internet being such a great resource for so many things, it has become a very good way for vacationers to post their own reviews of resorts allowing for other people to gauge whether or not that particular resort is going to be right for them.

There are so many vacation resort review sites out there, and I have come to find that a lot of these reviews are fairly accurate as long as you take an average of a few. You can’t just look at one review and assume that because the reviewer did not like the resort, that you will not like the resort either. Many people will complain about anything and often these complainers are the ones doing the reviewing so you need to take these reviews with a grain of salt. However, if you view ten to twenty reviews of a particular resort and most of them are positive, it is pretty safe to assume that it will be a place that you should enjoy.

Another way to make sure that you make the right choice in what vacation package that you book, is to plan out what it is that you are going to want to do and budget for both all inclusive packages and regular vacation packages that are not all inclusive. You can get a good read on how much you will spend on a vacation if you have planned out exactly what it is you would like to do and forecast a budget for the cost of everything. If it does not seem like it will be a good deal for you to go all inclusive, then you just make sure to take the alternate route of not going to an all inclusive resort and you will not be disappointed by the cost of your vacation, and you also will not be disappointed because you could not get the most out of your all inclusive vacation.

Tony has extensive knowledge on vacation reviews and also provides knowledge on all inclusive resorts.

Travel Guide to Portugal

Travel Guide to Portugal
By Chris Zend
Looking to visit a European country and can’t decide which one? Follow our quick guide to Portugal, and what makes holidays in Portugal so popular to tourists around the world.

A long time ago, Portugal was at the forefront of exploring the world. They have never achieved success in enticing visitors to its own shores until lately Beyond the outskirts of Lisbon, the Madeira Island, the Algarve the nation of Portugal was pretty much unknown and unseen by tourists for many years.

In the past, Portugal has been a hidden gem, overlooked by world travelers. Included the many offerings are lovely beaches, artistic finds, array of food choices, a distinct architecture to admire, temperate and warm weather, unique handicrafts, affordable hotels and friendly and very generous people.

There are more than 22 million that are attracted to Portugal every year. Despite its diminutive size of 225 kilometres width and 612 kilometres of length. One of the most satisfying places in Europe to travel is Portugal. We usually recon that visiting its rural places, and towns, will take a lot longer than expected, as there are so many lovely areas to visit and an abundance of rich culture and traditions to discover.

The people of this extraordinary land are known for their warmth. You will see almond trees growing in the Algarve, cork trees and wheat in Alentejo, and different beautiful, rustic scenery in other regions of the country.

This list is a basic structure for the activities you will undertake in Portugal, which can be expanded depending on your individual interests and personality.

For an in depth guide to Portugal visit the Portugal Holiday Blog.

5 Most Common Travel Insurance Claims
By Patrick Chong
With the widespread availability of cheap travel insurance, there is no good reason to risk travelling uninsured. There are plenty of accidents that can befall the unlucky traveller abroad, and if you have insurance, these accidents will likely be minor inconveniences - if you don’t, they could turn into expensive disasters.

Almost two million travel insurance claims are made every year by people from the UK, ranging from refunds on cancelled flights to the payment of costly medical bills abroad. While a great variety of claims are made, some are much more common than others. Here are the five insurance claims that you are most likely to make while on holiday abroad…

1. Medical Costs

With almost a third of recorded claims involving medical bills, this is by far the most common travel insurance claim. It is also the most expensive, at an average of almost £500 per claim, with insurance in America, Canada and Europe being especially expensive. Medical bills abroad can range from a few hundred pounds for basic treatment and medication to tens of thousands of pounds for helicopter evacuation or emergency repatriation. With prices that high, it is well worth investing in some worldwide travel insurance to cover you wherever you go!

2. Lost Baggage

After the disaster at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 on its opening day (where thousands of pieces of luggage were misplaced), people are now much more aware of the risk of lost baggage. It is a common problem for holiday goers; indeed, it is the second most common travel insurance claim. The loss of personal items can be a frustrating inconvenience, but your travel insurance will cover the cost of replacing your lost possessions.

3. Cancellation of Flights

Many people buy their insurance at the last minute, but the threat of cancellation is an important reason to book up your worldwide travel insurance as early as possible - this is the third most frequent travel insurance claim. Whether it is because you have to cancel the holiday yourself due to a family or personal emergency, or because the airline cancels the flight, having cover for this is essential - the average cost of cancellation is just under £400.

4. Travel Delay
If your journey is delayed it can lead to plenty of unforeseen costs, including last minute accommodation and paying for alternate transport, and it is fourth on the list of common travel insurance claims. Worldwide travel insurance can help to cover the costs associated, so next time you are sitting in an airport waiting for a delayed flight, at least you’ll know that your insurance is there to ease the cost!

5. Lost or Stolen Money

Cash is all too easy to misplace while on holiday, and is also the main target for pickpockets, casual thieves and conmen. Unsurprisingly, it is the fifth most common travel insurance claim made by UK travellers. A worldwide travel insurance policy typically features cover for the loss of money, so that if your wallet is stolen or misplaced you’ll have your cash replaced.

Patrick Chong is the Managing Director of Journey’s Travel. Their commercial travel insurance website, Insuremore, offers cheap worldwide travel insurance and offer a quick and easy online claims feature.
