Kauai Travel - Visiting Hawaii’s Garden Isle
by Martha M Lapinski
Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on earth and also one of the most expensive to live and visit. However, the cost of visiting Hawaii hasn’t deterred people from populating its shores. 100% of Hawaii’s economy is dependent upon tourism. In 1995, Hawaii closed down its last sugar cane plantation to devote its energy to solely tourism. So, you might want to make sure you are properly funded to enjoy this hot vacation spot.
Hawaii is made up of eight different islands. Every island has its own unique story and blessed landscape. The culture is evident when you tour the different islands. Only four of the eight islands are tourist spots though. Kauai is known as the Garden Isle because of the tropical rain forests. Kauai is also home to Waialeale Mountain, one of the wettest spots on earth. Waialeale gets on average 488 inches of rain per year. Kauai was the first Hawaiian island visited by the legendary Captain Cook. Kauai is also famous for the Na Pali Coast which can only be viewed by boat, helicopter or foot. Also, Kauai is home to the Mokihana Berry, this island’s official “flower,” and is actually a native citrus tree fruit.
Some other interesting things about Kauai are that the famous movies Jurassic Park and South Pacific have been filmed on this island. Also, Gilligan’s Island and episodes from Bay Watch have been filmed here. Every year Kauai hosts the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu Bay Golf Course. Golfing is very popular in Hawaii and athletes from all over the world come to enjoy Kauai’s golf courses.
Once you get to Kauai, you will want to see it all. One way to do this is to ride in a two person Scoot Car. You can see the waterfalls and visit all the different things Kauai has to offer by using an island map. You’ll be moving around like one of the locals in no time. Maybe you want to take a dip in the ocean and do some snorkeling or catch the waves and go surfing. Did you know you can also go horseback riding? Get a bike or hike to the Na Pali coast. Do some kayaking or do something really fun like using a boogie board! Kauai has some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in Hawaii and you can completely enjoy them just sitting there and doing some real relaxing, reading a book or sun bathing. No matter what speed you are wanting to go, Kauai has the perfect activities for you to enjoy. One more consideration is the airplane or helicopter tours. This is one way to explore and see all of Kauai’s beauty, especially if you are not up to doing the hike to see all this beauty first hand.
Last but certainly not least, make sure you pick up a souvenir or two from the many shops littering Kauai. Nothing says Hawaii more than that aloha shirt.
