Travel, Rest and Relaxation - Part 1
By Paul Selibio
Bored? Are you looking for something to do or places where to unwind or meet new friends? For those who have the budget for travels, there are thousands of places and activities worth experiencing outside the confines of your home or your state, or even your country.
Many people around the world love to give meaning to very important events. Celebrations, festivals or feast days are always common and a lot of people usually spend time, money and effort to join them. These activities are usually very social, and chances are, you will meet new friends along the way.
There are thousands of festivals and celebrations around the world to commemorate a special social event, a religious activity, or worthwhile cause. Here are two of the well known festivals or celebrations from different parts of the world:
The Boryeong Mud Festival
One of the more famous Korea festivals, the Boryeong Mud Festival, is participated by thousands of Koreans and foreigners from all parts of the globe. There are plenty of games, group dancing, and colorful fireworks shows - and of course, lots of mud. There are heaps and heaps of mud, which many people believe possess very good anti-aging properties that can help soften the skin, remove wrinkles and give a person a younger look. But if the mud doesn’t help your skin, the exercise and fun you will receive from mud wrestling, the “mud king” contests, several mud training drills and mud slides should help improve your body’s blood circulation.
The Daecheon swimming beach has always been the location of the Boryeong mud festival. It’s a perfect place for bathing and for getting some mud packs. And if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like to have mud all over your body, then it’s the mud prison for you. In the Boryeong Mud festival, you really don’t have other options but to get dirty.
So for those who love to travel, meet new friends, and get ‘mud dirty’, the Boryeong Festival is just the right activity for you. The Boryeong Festival usually takes place every 2nd week of July. For the year 2008, the Boryeong Festival will happen on July 12 to July 20. That should be enough time to have fun.
La Tomatina
If you’re the type of person who is into food fights, then you will probably love La Tomatina. Thousands of people attend this event. The accommodations in the town of Buñol in Valencia, Spain is very limited during the last Wednesday of August, the time when the La Tomatina takes place.
A few of the rules to remember when joining this food fight:
1.Throw only squashed tomatoes, and nothing else. Don’t start a big fight by throwing rocks or bottles. A slugfest with tomatoes is more fun.
2.Do not block the road where the tomato trucks pass by. Some people tend to get overexcited and try to stop everyone along the way or crowd in places where the tomatoes will be hauled over.
3.Start throwing tomatoes after the first water canon is shot. The first canon is usually shot around 10:30 or 11:00AM. After the signal, tomato fighting should ensue. Wear protective gears like goggles or gloves as things will get really messy.
4.Stop the tomato-throwing after the second water canon is shot. This usually happens around 1:00 to 1:30PM. By this time the streets should be covered with tomato juice, and everyone is red with tomato all over them. After the tomato fighting, people can hit the showers prepared by the local government for them, or they can go to the Buñol river for a dip.
These are two of the well known festivals around the world. If you find the opportunity to join them, then take the trip. These activities will not only help get you new friends, but should give you a chance to travel and see the world and find out what you have been missing all these years.
